Guided excursion Carona – In the footsteps of Andrea Solario
Discover Carona, the place of origin of the painter Andrea Solario (c. 1465-1524), one of the key figures of the Renaissance between Italy and France. The Solari family of Carona, composed of sculptors and architects, played a significant role in shaping Renaissance art and architecture across Europe through their contributions to major construction projects. Andrea, along with his brother Cristoforo (c. 1468-1524), an engineer and sculptor, helped transform the early Lombard Renaissance by blending classicism with naturalism and integrating Venetian and Flemish influences - contributing substantially to the emergence of the so-called “modern manner”.
Carona boasts an exceptional architectural heritage, spanning from the late Romanesque to the Baroque, showcasing the remarkable craftsmanship of its artists. Highlights include the late Renaissance church of San Giorgio and Sant’Andrea, adorned with frescoes and stucco decorations, the recently restored 15th-century church of Santa Marta, and three residences belonging to the Solari family, built between the 16th and 18th centuries. A stroll through the village’s narrow lanes is a journey back in time – an immersive encounter with art and history.
Join a guided tour to explore the historical legacy of this enchanting village, including the mystery behind the Solari's Last Supper, the Church of San Giorgio and Sant‘Andrea, the Solari family home, and much more.
